Beets the bomb for pre-workout

Want an all natural, stimulant free pre-workout that won’t give you the buzz of ten cappuccinos and leave you staring into space and struggling to sleep?

I find it very confusing with the extensive research we have into nutrition these days that we still seem to flood our body with products that are well marketed but contain little to zero nutritious components. For example, a ‘pre-workout’ drink would usually contain a concoction of caffeine and artificial sweeteners like aspartame, Sucralose and Acesulfame K.

Beetroot, is rich in nitrates, which converts to nitric oxide in the body relaxing blood vessels and increasing blood flow and oxygen to working muscles. Increased blood flow means less fatigue, more endurance and enhanced performance. They contain nutrients that you would find alongside the nasties in pre-workout drinks like Niacin and Vitamin C and are also a great source of fiber, folate, riboflavin, thiamin and vitamin K. Beets also contain nitrates and pigments that may help lower blood pressure and improve athletic performance.

Talking minerals, beets contains 0.67 milligrams of iron in each half-cup serving, which provides 4 percent of your RDA. Iron obtained from plant-based sources such as beets is non-heme iron, and is best absorbed by the body when it is eaten along with a rich source of vitamin C. Maximize iron absorption by drizzling cooked beets with lemon juice, or combining raw beets in a salad with slices of orange.

Beets are also a good source of calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and zinc. Adequate daily intake of these minerals is essential for the health and maintenance of your cardiovascular, skeletal, muscular and neurological systems.

They also contain a high concentration of antioxidants, compounds that may prevent damage to DNA by inhibiting the destructive action of free radicals within the body. Especially rich in betalain, the antioxidant that is responsible for their beautiful colour!

The Turmeric Co. have finally dropped a beetroot shot this week after the anticipation for a product on the market like this for a long time I am incredibly happy to have it available at my gym before a workout!

Recipes to try:

Beetroot, Turmeric & Lemon Tea

Beetroot (Diced)

Turmeric Shot by The Turmeric Co.

1 Lemon

Cut the beetroot & lemon and throw into a pan with water. Very slowly and gently bringing to simmer and leave to marinade! Seive and drink hot or refrigerate for an early morning preworkout kick. One turmeric shot will give you 5g of turmeric. You could even throw in a cinnamon stick, if your into that sort of thing!
